Holt Research Forest is an institution dedicated to long-term forest research aimed at enhancing forestry and harvesting practices. Your donation helps develop the workforce for early-career forest researchers and ensures ongoing scientific contributions through long-term ecological monitoring. Your support strengthens collaboration among researchers, landowners, and industry professionals, thereby bridging the gap between scientific research and real-world forestry applications.
Over our 40+ year history as a long-term research site, we’ve hosted over 100 summer research technicians and interns, providing them with their first professional opportunity in Maine’s forests. This year, we will welcome two summer research technicians who will contribute to our ongoing projects and conduct independent research using our data archive.
A former 2024 research technician also returns to complete a remote co-op project focused on forest ecology data analysis and environmental education. Their work will contribute to a forestry-based curriculum, connecting students to Maine’s forests through the Forest Ecology Research Network (FERN). This opportunity will provide valuable experience in geospatial analysis, data visualization, and curriculum development. Additionally, a PhD student from Tufts University is leading data collection efforts for a Northeastern States Research Cooperative (NSRC) General Grant project investigating the efficacy of structural retention practices to enhance forest resiliency throughout the Northern Forest Region.
As an organization, we’ve built on the success of our summer research technician program by partnering with local colleges and universities such as Colby College, the University of New England, and the University of Southern Maine to offer early career opportunities to students throughout the year across a range of disciplines, including environmental education, communications, and non-profit administration.
