Maine Forest Rangers are a position within the Maine Forest Service. They act as resource protection and law enforcement professionals, enforcing environmental, forestry, and conservation laws while detecting, preventing, and suppressing forest fires. Additionally, forest rangers educate the public and raise awareness about wildfires and responsible forest management.

Responsibilities

Forest ranger duties include preparing and updating fire action plans, training firefighters, supervising firefighting operations, and investigating suspicious activities and fires. They also patrol and inspect designated areas, observe, report, and take action against violations.

Requirements

Associate degree from a forestry curriculum accredited by the Society of American Foresters

Forest rangers, like foresters, are directly involved in all matters concerning forests. They observe what is happening in the forest, including changing seasonal patterns and pest and disease challenges, and they assess water quality. As the first line of defense against forest fires, Maine Forest Rangers also play a role in the response if Maine experiences a change in the frequency or severity of wildfires.
